Anyone planning to be wed in Massachusetts requires a current marriage license issued by the Commonwealth whether or not you live within the state. This license does not have to be from the town that you are getting married in or the town in which you currently reside. It is necessary to apply together in person "to file your intentions" with any city or town clerk. Fees do tend to vary from town to town. Massachusetts requires the couple be both over the age of 18.
Same sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts imposes a three-day waiting period from the day you file your "marriage intentions" to the day you pick-up your license. A Massachusetts marriage license is valid anywhere within the state for sixty days from the date first filed.
Marriage License and Officiant Payment are due before the ceremony begins. There are two reasons for this:
First, and most importantly, as a JP I cannot perform your ceremony until I view the expiration date on your Marriage License.
Second, once the ceremony ends, couples are very excited to go and take part in the picture session of their wedding. As your officiant I would not feel comfortable, to interfere in this special part of your wedding.
Therefore, to make it easier for all, it is best to put the officiant payment in the same envelope with the Marriage License and give it to the best man to hand to me upon arrival.
